Gangubai Kathiawadi to be Released on February 25, 2022
Gangubai Kathiawadi, the much-discussed film directed by the famous director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, has a February 25, 2022 release date. The date was announced by the director on his social media handle. COVID-19 lockdown and restrictions on theatres have delayed the release of this film. Several dates had been declared since 2020 but had to be cancelled for several reasons. The story is based on the life and struggles of Gangubai in the socio-political background of Mumbai in the 1960s.
Alia Bhatt plays the role of Gangubai, who was a sex worker in the red-light area of Kamathipura in Mumbai. She had been pushed into this profession from an early age. The film narrates the story of Gangubai’s life where she became the head of the brothel and then entered politics and emerged as a leader in Kamathipura. This is Alia’s first film with the ace director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The trailer of the film, and Alia’s different look as Gangubai, has attracted the attention of fans and viewers. Ajay Devgan is also a part of the film.
Before its release in India, Gangubai Kathiawadi will have its international premiere at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival in February. The film was selected in a special category named Berlinale Special. This year, the selection criterion was films that were shot during the COVID-19 pandemic. The festival’s Artistic Director, Carlo Chatrian, told the media that the reason behind the selection of Gangubai Kathiawadi was the relevance of the subject of the film. This relevance is universal and not limited to the Indian context.
