Face Masks critical in preventing the spread of Covid-19: Study
The researchers studied the trend and easing procedures in China, Italy, and New York and found the use of masks reduced the number of infections by a huge number.
“Our results clearly show that airborne transmission via respiratory aerosols represents the dominant route for the spread of Covid-19,” said researcher Renyi Zhang from Texas A&M University, US.
“By analyzing the pandemic trends without face-covering using the statistical method and by projecting the trend, we calculated that over 66,000 infections were prevented by using a face mask in little over a month in New York City,” Zhang added.
The study said the use of a face mask along with social distancing and other safety measures is the most favorable factor to stop the spread of Covid19.
The study showed that using a mask is essential to avoid infected coughing droplets from reaching uninfected persons and is also critical for these uninfected persons to stay away from breathing the aerosols.
“Social-distancing and washing our hands must continue, but that’s not sufficient enough protection. Wearing a face mask as well as practicing good hand hygiene and social distancing will greatly reduce the chances of anyone contracting the Covid-19 virus,” Zhang wrote.
The researchers accomplished that wearing a face mask in public corresponds to the most efficient way to check inter-human spread.
