2016 Padma Awards

Editorial

February 2016

Dear Readers,

First and foremost, let me wish all our Indian readers a Happy 67th Republic Day! India is 67 years young this month. It is a very proud moment for every Indian living anywhere in the world. 67 years may seem like a long time, but for nation building it is only just yesterday. We have come a long way, and at the same time, have not even scratched the surface.

Aruna and I recently visited India after a long five year delay. If anybody goes to India with a negative outlook, you might see many things wrong. But when I visited, the only things I see are progress, improvement, higher achievement, and tremendous success in every field.

Being realistic, I do see problems and discuss them with people and media. But that is not my focus. Some go to India and compare it with the US, which is fine, but if you stop there, that is wrong. Compare India with what you saw when you were there last time, and you will see tremendous progress.

It is our honor and privilege this month to feature the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhusan, and Padma Sri Awards, which were awarded on Republic Day. I feel great pride that the Indian Government recognizes these highly accomplished individuals who have contributed towards the progress of India and mankind. At the same time, you may wonder why it took so long (Padma Awards were instituted in 1954) to honor individuals like Founder of The Reliance Empire Late Shri Dhirubhai Ambani, Art Of Living Founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Spiritual Leaders Late Swami Dayanand Saraswati and Swami Tejomayananda. As they say, better late than never.

Now let me turn my attention towards the progress of our younger generations. Let me take this opportunity to welcome our newest contributor, Nisha Jani. Upon reading her bio at the end of this month’s “Ask the Expert” column, you will be equally amazed as I am. She another example of this generation breaking glass ceilings. Such an accomplished person at a young age.

Speaking of our younger generation, do not miss the article by Rina Shah of The Arpan Group. She interviews artist Nidhi Chanani, another example of our younger generation making a name for themselves.

Let me close this column with a reminder about upcoming MyShadi Bridal Expos! Three shows are lined up – Atlanta, Tampa and Fort Lauderdale. If you have not registered to attend or for the free trip to India, please do so by visiting www.myshadibridalexpo.com.
