Kalank Review
Kalank is set in the time of partition, in a fictional town on the outskirts of Lahore called Husnabad. At the center of the story are Roop (Alia) and Zafar (Varun). Zafar is a blacksmith and the illegitimate son of a courtesan Bahar Begum (Madhuri) and rich aristocrat Balraj Chaudhury (Sanjay). Roop is the second wife of Balraj Chaudhury’s legitimate son Dev (Aditya). When Roop finds herself attracted to Zafar, what begins as a revenge plot ends up becoming a love story with disastrous consequences. Kalank’s lavish and extravagant sets are definitely a visual treat. One look and you know that the film seems to heavily borrow a lot from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s universe of period dramas. But Kalank is let down by its tiring, over-crowded and heavily melodramatic script. Not just the songs, everything from its action to the dialogues looks choreographed. Even though it has a talented multi-star cast to lift it up, Kalank’s story leaves little to the imagination. |
